Introduction

Masters in Japanese Studies (MJS) programme was kicked off at the then Japan Study Centre in 2006 and continued successfully after the conversion of the centre to the Department of Japanese Studies in 2017 until the postponement of all professional master’s programme by the university authority in 2020. To minimize the knowledge gap and to replicate the miraculous development experience of Japanese for achieving the development goals of Bangladesh, the Department of Japanese Studies has decided to resume the Professional Masters Programme on Japanese Studies within the modified guidelines of the University of Dhaka. Accordingly, the Department of Japanese Studies has redesigned the Masters in Japanese Studies Programme (MJS) within the purview of the Rules of the Executive/Professional Masters Programme, 2022.

The demand for knowledgeable human resources in Japan-funded development projects and Japanese companies in Bangladesh is quite high. Moreover, due to the transformation of the relationship of two friendly nations to the Comprehensive Partnership under the able leadership of the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the collaboration between two nations in the area of trade, aid and investment is significantly increasing. To reap the benefits of the comprehensive partnership, skilled human resources with the knowledge of the Japanese development model, management system, business culture and language can not only play a crucial role for strengthening the partnership but also provide a huge opportunity to learn from Japan and contribute to the economic development of Bangladesh. Therefore, the Department of Japanese Studies intends to provide opportunities to the students and professionals to learn about Japan and endeavor for the economic and social development of the country and seize the employment opportunity in Japan-funded projects and Japanese companies. Furthermore, a new horizon has been opened for Japanese Studies graduates to work in Japan as the country has opened its border for the skilled immigrants to stay and work in Japan because of the aging problem.

Objectives of the Programme

  1. a) To provide opportunities to the students to learn Japanese language, literature, history, culture, development policy, public policy, political thoughts, political economy, environment, business management, business communication, law and public policy and Japan Bangladesh relations and other issues related to Japan.
  2. b) To apply the Japanese model of socio-economic development for the faster economic growth and social transformation of Bangladesh.
  3. c) To provide employment opportunities in Japanese companies, Japan-funded development projects and migration to Japan as high-skilled employee.
  4. d) To provide progression opportunity to the students to MPhil/PhD programme at the department. e) To provide higher study opportunities in partner universities in Japan.
  5. f) To equip students with appropriate knowledge and skills to qualify for the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship and other scholarships offered by Japanese universities

Duration of the Programme

This one-year Professional Masters in Japanese Studies programme has 44 credits and it is divided into 2 (two) semesters. Each semester will be of 19 weeks- 15 weeks for class lectures and sessional examinations, one week for preparation of final examination and three weeks for semester final examination. The programme includes 10 (ten) courses of 1000 marks and viva voce examination of 100 marks which is translated into 44 credit hours. The total credit hours will be evaluated on the basis of total 1100 marks.

Eligibility for Admission

In each batch 40 students will be enrolled on the basis of the eligibility criteria set by the university authority. A student graduating from any discipline can apply for the Professional MJS programme. After being selected through the admission test conducted by the department, eligible students will receive an offer letter for admission.
