E-mail: saifullah.djs@du.ac.bd<\/span> Abstract<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Due to the geographical distance and cultural diversity, South Asia was <\/span>considered a \u2018distant neighbour\u2019 to Japan\u2019s foreign policy and retained diminutive <\/span>relations during the early post-WWII period. To amplify its \u2018bubble economy in the cold <\/span>war era, Japan moved towards China immediately after the \u2018Nixon Shock\u2019 and towards <\/span>Southeast Asia, following Fukuda\u2019s \u2018heart to heart\u2019 strategy in the 1960s and 1970s, <\/span>respectively. Since the end of the cold war, the world has witnessed several new incidents <\/span>in the new world order, ranging from Japan\u2019s \u2018lost decade\u2019 to China\u2019s rise. Understanding <\/span>the changing geopolitical realities of the global order, increasing strategic demand of the <\/span>Indian Ocean Region (IOR), and huge potential market for Japanese goods, Japan has now <\/span>broadened its foreign and defence outlook and economic engagement with this region. <\/span>Moreover, South Asia will soon be an \u2018economic hub\u2019 with middle-class consumers. In <\/span>that case, China\u2019s growing investment and proximity to South Asian countries, <\/span>particularly Xi\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) under his \u2018China Dream,\u201d has been seen <\/span>as a significant threat to Japan\u2019s new strategy. Besides, South Asia became a crucial part <\/span>of the Asia-Pacific region to implement Japan\u2019s new Free and Open Indo Pacific (FOIP) <\/span>policy and make Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) effective. From this strategic <\/span>point of view, Japan already has maintained warm relations with India and swelling its <\/span>relations with other South Asian countries. Given the above circumstances, this paper <\/span>aims to figure out the prospects of Japan\u2019s new shifting foreign policy towards South Asia <\/span>and identify the critical challenges of Japanese engagement with this region, where China <\/span>is already a decisive actor. The methods and tools employed in this paper include lexical <\/span>scrutiny\u2019s, mapping, contextual analysis, and qualitative and mixed methods data analysissoftware (MAXQDA) to analyse the current state of knowledge and development.
